Deb's Story
Deb Giles was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario. Like so many proud Canadians she LOVED playing hockey. She was a faithful follower of her beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. Even during her adult years living in Vancouver, BC she remained a loyal Leaf fan. Over the years Deb played with many hockey teams both in BC and Ontario. If you played hockey with Deb you witnessed her drive and tremendous dedication to her team and to the game itself. If you played against Deb you witnessed the passion she had for the game, giving it her all each and every time.
Deb continued to play the game she loved until one day, at the very young age of 46, she played her last game. Deb fell on the ice during a game and broke her ankle. She was in a plaster cast for about 3 weeks and shortly after changing from the plaster cast to a walking one a blood clot developed in her leg. Unfortunately it was discovered too late. The clot travelled to her lung and she very suddenly and very tragically passed away February 2, 2013.
Those closest to Deb who know of her love of sports, all sports, decided to start a scholarship fund to assist girls who due to financial constraints may not be able to play hockey. Helping others was very close to Deb's heart so putting these two things together just made sense! All girls deserve the chance to create their own hockey memories!
